Reactivate camera permission

Modified on Fri, 4 Jul at 7:47 AM

Trying to scan a QR code on a machine or another asset, but your camera isn’t working or was previously denied access?

Here’s what you can do:

1. Google Chrome

Go to: Three-dot menu → Settings → Privacy & Security → Site Settings → Camera

You can configure default access here and allow or block specific websites individually (sources: netzwelt.de, netzwelt.de).

You can also use the camera/microphone icon in the address bar to grant or deny access directly for the current site (source: netzwelt.de).

2. Mozilla Firefox

Go to: Menu → Settings → Privacy & Security

Under “Permissions”, click on “Settings” next to “Camera.”

In the dialog box, you can allow, block, or remove websites — with an option to automatically block requests from new sites (sources: netzwelt.de, support.mozilla.org).

3. Microsoft Edge

Go to: Menu → Settings → Cookies and Site Permissions → Camera

Enable the toggle. Depending on your settings, websites can request access or have camera access enabled by default (source: netzwelt.de).

Note: As with Chrome and Firefox, each site must be allowed individually (source: support.google.com).

4. Opera

Go to: Bottom left in Settings → Privacy & Security → Site Settings → Camera

Here you can manage camera permissions for each website individually (source: netzwelt.de).

5. Safari (macOS)

To manage camera access in Safari:

  1. Open Safari and navigate to the website you want to manage.

  2. Click Safari in the top menu bar → Settings for This Website…

  3. In the dropdown menu, you'll see the Camera option. Choose one of the following:

    • Ask (default – Safari prompts for permission)

    • Allow (always allow for this site)

    • Deny (block access)

You can also manage site-wide settings via:Safari → Settings → Websites → Camera
From there, you can view and modify permissions for all websites you've visited.

Important Tip:
Make sure System Preferences also allow Safari to access your camera:
System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera → Safari → Enable

Tips for Camera Issues Despite Granted Access

  • Use the camera/microphone icon in the address bar to adjust permissions in real time (source: netzwelt.de).

  • Restart your browser or system to resolve potential conflicts with other applications (source: support.google.com).

  • Check your system settings, e.g., in Windows: Settings → Privacy → Camera (source: support.microsoft.com).

  • Close other applications that may be using or blocking the camera (source: support.microsoft.com).

  • If you're experiencing hardware-related issues, try rolling back or reinstalling the camera driver:
Device Manager → Camera → Roll Back Driver / Reinstall Driver (source: support.microsoft.com).
